This piece grew from an interest in the quiet resilience of the lotus — a flower that emerges from still, shadowed water yet opens into something remarkably light and delicate. The painting was approached slowly, building the darker greens and reflections first and allowing the flowers to gradually become the points of light within the composition. The lily pads and stems were kept loose and organic rather than overly defined, giving the pond a sense of movement beneath the stillness.
